Microsoft Webmatrix! Can it be… PHP IDE 2.0?

Microsoft Webmatrix A short review of Microsoft Webmatrix. Used for an initial WordPress setup on a remote Ubuntu 10.10 server with MySQL.

We’ve only had the opportunity to scratch the surface of what this tools capabilities are. Being an advocate of open source technologies we are only testing the PHP,  MySQL, and Open Source application  implementation and management features of the tool. The tool is a free download from Microsoft.

Here is the first impression we get from this point of view. PHP IDE 2.0! A very powerful PHP IDE with several extra management features built in. The interface is very intuitive and powerful with all the usual PHP IDE suspects plus…

  1. Local IIS 7 express server (may need to adjust your rewrites for nginx and apache)
  2. FTP to remote site (needs SFTP support)
  3. MySQL management of remote site (GUI)
  4. A built in app store where you can download from a fine list of open source products.

Although the interface is very intuitive and only took us a few minutes to figure how to get started, the remote MySQL and FTP setup took a little tweaking to get just right. We will have a fully documented, in detail post on how to use this fun and powerful tool to support open source websites in an upcoming report. Stay Tuned…
